Kindergarten High Frequency Words (HFW)


Please refer to this page to see what words we have introduced throughout the year.

Students will practice their High Frequency Word (HFW) cards every day at school. They will remain at school in a baggie with your child's name on the bag. New words will be added on Monday's for your child to practice throughout the week. The baggie will stay at school all week. The High Frequency Word cards will grow over the school year. Please help your child be responsible for their cards. You can make your own set of cards at home.



Activities that you and your child can work on at home are:
1. make 2 sets (at home) and play concentration or memory (you can use index cards)
2. play go fish
3. make an additional set for home and post them in your child's bedroom to make their own Word Wall with all their HFW cards
4. use paper or a White board and have your child practice writing their new words
5. list any words you can make out of the HFW cards (example: and - A, an, Dan)
6. verbally create a short story using all the words in your BIG baggie
7. rainbow words - write your words with colored pencils/crayons and create a pattern with the colors you choose
8. ABC order - write your words in ABC order - (example: A, and, do, we)

2016-2017 Kindergarten Sight Word List
These words are a combination of the Dolch pre-primer and primer lists. They are high frequency words, meaning that they are those words that appear most frequently when reading. Often these words cannot be sounded out. Our goal is that children identify these words quickly, confidently, and accurately when reading texts. Children are encouraged to learn how to write as well as read these words correctly. While the sight word list has been broken down into four quarters, your child is welcome to move at a faster pace.
